Simply add a teaspoon of table salt or sea salt to a cup of distilled or boiled and cooled water along with a pinch of baking soda. Squirting this into your nostrils and letting it drain out over the sink will relieve inflammation and help flush out dust, pollen, and other irritants.
Peppermint tea is also an effective treatment. It is a natural anti-inflammatory and decongestant. If you have a scratchy throat from post-nasal drip, the tea will also soothe that dry feeling. Horseradish and wasabi are two more natural decongestants. Feel free to add generous amounts of these ingredients to a sandwich or some fish to breathe easier for a few hours.
Home Remedies for Allergies with Itching
Hives or a rash can be unsightly and irritating. If you scratch the itchy skin too much, you can develop a skin infection or spread the rash to other parts of your body. Soothing the itch is important to proper care. Basil is an excellent treatment for skin allergies. Brew some basil tea, cool it, then apply to skin with a soft cloth. If you want an even more refreshing poultice, soak a washcloth in basil tea, wring out thoroughly, place in a Ziploc bag and chill in the refrigerator. The cool cloth will take some of the heat away from the itchy skin when left in place for a half hour at a time.
Milk compresses are another excellent home remedy for skin allergies. Simply soak a cloth in cold milk, wring out well and place over the affected area. The milk has mild antibiotic qualities in addition to the soothing action of the milk.
If you can’t sit around with poultices draped over your hives, try taking a tepid bath to which you’ve added either a half cup of baking soda or a cup of colloidal oatmeal.
Don’t use any soap or cleanser on the skin; simply wash in the treated water then pat yourself dry. This will keep your skin allergy under control for several hours.
Finally, for allergies of any kind, you should consider a daily preventative made by squiring the juice out of one-half of a lime, then combining with a teaspoon of honey in tea or some other warm beverage. If you get into the habit of drinking this each morning, you’ll find that you’re less prone to allergic reactions over time.
